Issogne Castle Guided Tour
One of the most important Valdostan castles belonging to the Challant family. It stands on the ruins of a Roman villa and incorporates a square tower that was remodelled between the 15th and 16th centuries and recovered in the 19th century.
The guided tour starts from the horseshoe-shaped castle courtyard with its symbolic pomegranate fountain,
Who were the characters in the castle: George de Challant, Marguerite de la Chambre, René de Challant, or Victor Avondo?
That's what we will try to discover in this very interesting tour.
The Issogne Castle, a splendid manor house of medieval origin, stands on the remains of a Roman villa and incorporates a square tower, remodelled between the 15th and 16th centuries. Its structure then underwent some renovations in the 19th century, which gave the castle a particular horseshoe shape, almost unique in its kind.
Our visit will retrace each stage of its history, starting from the courtyard, where we will be welcomed by the splendid pomegranate fountain, rich in symbolism and fascinating legends that I will illustrate.
We will then continue along the large portico on the ground floor, which with its richly frescoed lunettes depicting scenes of daily life and craftsmen's workshops, it will be a bit like seeing old photographs depicting life in past centuries, truly a precious jewel!
Both reception and private rooms are frescoed with complex symbols, of which there are no less than 50 in total, and observe its most characteristic features, passing through the kitchen, the dining room, the chapel, with its beautiful flamboyant altar, the French king's room and the baronial room. Both the state rooms and the private rooms are enriched by various frescoes, the symbolism of which we will explore.
I look forward for this fascinating journey full of secrets to discover!
