Château Saint-Pierre, prestigious Museum of Natural Science
Saint-Pierre Castle
The Castle of Saint-Pierre, today the seat of the prestigious Museum of Natural Sciences, is one of the oldest residences in the Aosta Valley. The nobles of Sancto Petro appear very early in written documents and are certainly among the most archaic noble families of the region. The castle, which initially consisted of a building that has now disappeared but of which archaeological excavations have found traces under the western tower, was transformed, between the second and the fourteenth centuries, into a manor house built around a keep and outbuildings and surrounded by an imposing wall. The 16th century, after the Vuillet family acquired the property, was a golden period for the manor, which took on its present form. After passing into the hands of the Roncas family and a period of abandonment, the castle was acquired by the Bollati family at the end of the nineteenth century, who modified its forms in accordance with the neo-Gothic fashion of the time, adding, among other things, the four hanging turrets to the central tower.
Today the castle houses the Efisio Noussan Natural Science Museum, a treasure trove of science accessible to all, able to tell the story of the Alpine territory with an in-depth look at the new issues of climate change. An evocative journey between science and history in one of the most emblematic castles of the Aosta Valley.
